A meeting of Littlefield residents was held on Thursday, April 28, to address the Littlefield School Board Bond election which will be decided May 7, 2022. Early voting continues until May 3, 2022 at the Littlefield City Hall 301 XIT Dr. Early voting on the two Texas Constitutional amendments also continue at the Lamb County Courthouse.

Opening remarks were made by Littlefield Independent School District’s Superintendent Mike Read. Supt. Read explained that the early planning stages began in June of 2021 as the need for either renovation or building was needed to address the aging buildings that were becoming a concern. The current Littlefield Junior High building is the oldest which has been through the wear and tear of its 72-year old service. Also, the older buildings do not meet TEA guidelines. He also addressed that the quality of a community’s schools not only attract people to a community, but also factors into families and businesses staying in a community.

Supt. Read then introduced the team of planners, who explained the plans and financing of the project and answered questions attendees might have.

Why now? The opportunity to consider the bond issue is related to the Continental Dairy facility, the upcoming Yellowhouse Wind Farm and the privatization of the TCCC which reduces the tax burden on local property owners. It is an opportunity to keep the necessary tax increases as low as possible.

Also, the Texas Constitutional Amendment proposed on the State Constitution ballot would, if approved, increase the property value exemption from $25,000.00 to $40,000.00. The bottom line is that Littlefield may have a rare opportunity to create a very beneficial asset to the community.
