The Summer Reading Program for children ages 4 to 12 years old at the Lamb County Library is in full swing. The program meets every Wednesday afternoon from 2pm until 4pm through the month of June. The theme for this summer is “Oceans of Possibilities.” Special guests are featured each week.

This week the special guests were Alex Martinez with the Science Spectrum of Lubbock and Toni Meredith. The book was “Run, Sea Turtle Run; A Hatchling’s Journey.” The craft was paper plate Sea Turtle.

Mr. Martinez brought along a preserved sea urchin, a sea horse and the jaws of a shark. He explained that a shark skeleton was entirely cartilage not bone.

He presented a demonstration on how the properties of sea water can be changed by acids and other substances that find their way into the seas. He also presented a demonstration on how oil spills in the sea can be cleaned up utilizing materials developed through science.

Following the presentation the children divided into groups. One group went to crafts, another went to return and check out library books, and another group stayed for read aloud by one of the children.

Next week the program will have a special guest,”Cali the Scuba Diver.” The Book is “Jellyfish”, and the craft will be paper bowl jellyfish.

Parents may still register their children for the summer reading program by coming to the library. Parents will be asked to sign a permissions document. An Itinerary is provided at the librarians counter. There is no charge for the program. Children can be added to the library system and allowed to check out books.

For security reasons the library is closed to the public and the doors will be locked during the program hours from 2pm until 4pm on Wednesday afternoons.
