Mustangs run rule Wolverines, 11-1

The Olton Mustangs’ varsity baseball team took down the Springlake-Earth Wolverines, 11- 1, in district action at home on Saturday.

With the win, the Mustangs improve to 3-6 overall, 2-0 in district play, while the Wolverines fall to 4-5 overall, 0-2 in district play.

Aaron Corpus started on the mound for the Mustangs, pitching two innings, earning two strikeouts and one walk. Jayden Leathers came on in the third inning and pitched two innings. He earned four strikeouts, while giving up just one run. Brian Capen came on in the fifth inning, pitching two innings to close out the game. He earned for strikeouts.

Saenz representing Olton at State Powerlifting Meet

The Olton Mustangs’ powerlifting team had four athletes make it to the Regional Meet, which was held in Sundown on March 10th.

Francisco Saenz came in first place in the super heavyweight division, qualifying for State. He finished with a 650 lb lift on squat, 400 lb lift on bench press and a 580 lb dead lift.

Sophomore, Gabriel Chavez, finished fourth in the 242 lb weight class, while Alberto Sinaloa came in 7th in the 220 lb weight class, setting personal bests on all three lifts.

Lady Cat softball opens district play Tuesday

The Littlefield Lady Cats varsity softball team is off to a 6-8-1 start overall as they get set to kick off district play next Tuesday at Shallowater.

Most recently the Lady Cats took part in the Snyder Tournament that saw them go 3-3 in tournament play.

The Lady Cats fell to Brownfield, 11-5 in four innings, but came back to beat Slaton, 12-11.

Wolverines fall to Hale Center in district-opener, 12-5

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines’ varsity baseball team dropped their season opener on Tuesday to the Hale Center Owls, 12-5.

With the loss, the Wolverines fall to 4-4 overall, 0-1 in district play.

Hale Center posted one run in the top of the first inning and three more runs in the top of the second inning, taking a, 4-0 lead over the Wolverines.

Lady Wolverines compete at Canyon to open track season

The Springlake-Earth Lady Wolverines track team ran in the small division – which consisted of 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A teams – at Canyon last weekend.

Angel Darden took first place in the high jump, clearing 5’2".

Jaden DeLeon finished third in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 6:00.3 and third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:37.08.

Wildcats selected to All-District teams

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity basketball team was well represented on the District 2-3A All-District team.

Senior forward, J’Shun Davis, was named one of the distrit’s co-MVP’s along with Shallowater’s Jett Johnston.

“J’Shun was our captain, our ‘go to’ guy and has been a very solid player for the last four years,” Head Coach Rob Ogle said. “His scoring and rebounding will be areas that must be addressed and replaced for next season. He will be greatly missed.”

Wolverines hold off Muleshoe JV, 12-9

The Springlake-Earth Wolverines varsity baseball team won the championship game of the first ever Shorty Barlow Wolverine Classic, as they took down Muleshoe’s JV team, 12- 9.

The Wolverines finshed 3-0 in tournament play with wins over Tahoka’s JV and Smyer, pushing them to 4-2 overall on the year.

“We got down against these guys, and there were a couple of times where some teams would just walk off and say I’m done with it and we used this as a learning experience,” Head Coach DJ Atwood said. “Smyer, tight game, learning experience, I have the upmost confidence going into a series this year, because our boys are ready to compete and battle and we are swinging the sticks right now.”

Wildcats fall to River Road, 8-7

The Littlefield Wildcats’ varsity baseball team fell short in their comeback attempt, 8-7, against the River Road Wildcats in their final game of tournament play on Friday.

With the loss the Wildcats fall to 1-5 overall on the season.

Freshman, Blake Green, started on the hill for the Wildcats pitching four innings, earning one strike out, while giving up two walks and four runs. Sophomore, Nick Mata, came on in relief, pitching three innings. He earned one strike out, while giving up four runs.
