ELLEN MORGAN

Church service for Ellen Morgan, 89, of Floydada, formerly of Muleshoe, who died Monday, June 11, 2018 in Plainview, was held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 14, 2018 at Calvary Baptist Church in Muleshoe, with Brother Jeff Coffman of Muleshoe officiating. Burial was in Fairlawn Cemetery at Amherst, with Ellis Funeral Home of Muleshoe in charge of arrangements. Ellen was born Oct. 14, 1928, in Blanchard, Okla., to Henry S. and Mary Kartie (Perry) Corley. She married Horace Morgan in Clovis, N.M. on Jan. 4, 1947. Ellen was a seamstress in the Muleshoe area for many years, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Muleshoe. Ellen is preceded in death by her parents. Ellen is survived by her husband, Horace; her two sons, James Morgan and his wife, Mary Ann of Lisbon Falls, Maine and Dennis Morgan and his wife, Ginger of Floydada; her two daughters, Charlotte Shultz of Lubbock, and Deborah Minnick of Floydada; eight grandchildren; 13 greatgrandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

WILLIAM PAUL VERDEN

William Paul Verden, 83, of Haskell, died Wednesday, June 6, 2018. A funeral service was held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 9, 2018 at the First Baptist Church, Springlake with former pastor, Glenn Harlin, officiating. Burial was in Earth Cemetery, at Earth, with Smith Family Funeral Homes of Haskell, in charge of arrangements. William was born Dec. 22, 1934, to Sibyl (McGee) and Glen Verden. He married Evelyn (Jones) on July 19, 1958 in Silverton. William was an Elementary School Teacher and Principal. He taught in Silverton and Springlake-Earth; and taught Sunday School at Silverton, and in Springlake- Earth. William enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing games. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sibyl Verden; father, Glen Verden; and two sisters, Susie Hignight, and Jo Brown.

SARA M. WOODS

Graveside service for Sara M. Woods, 95, of Sudan, who died Friday, June 8, 2018 in Amherst, was held Monday morning, June 11, at Sudan Cemetery, with Mike Woods of Sudan officiating. Ellis Funeral Home of Sudan was in charge of arrangements. She was born Oct. 22, 1922 in Farmersville, Texas to Reed P. and Mary (Mason) Markham. Sara had lived in the Sudan area since 1932. She graduated from Sudan High School in 1939 and attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Sara was active in the USO service organization providing games, meals and dancing partners for the servicemen during World War II, a rewarding experience. She then became a nanny and babysitter in the Lubbock area. She moved to Denver, Colo. and then to Albuquerque, N.M.,while working for a car dealership, before returning back to Sudan, to work at First National Bank of Sudan for 27 years. After retiring, Sara drove to Lubbock to work as a greeter for City Bank. She was always a people person.

SILVERIO P. SALAS

Silverio P. “Jack” Salas, 83, of Olton, died Thursday, June 7, 2018, in Hale Center. Rosary was said, followed by a memorial Mass Monday morning, June 11, 2018, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Olton, with Father Sylvester D’Souza officiating. Cremation arrangements were under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors. Jack was born Jan. 13, 1935, in Runge, Texas, to Timeoteo and Jesusita (Peraida) Salas. A lifetime Olton resident, Jack was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Jack enjoyed puzzle books, playing Bingo, and pitching washers. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Lee Salas; and a sister, Senaida Diaz. Survivors include his son, Tim Salas of Olton; his daughters, Sanny Jimenez and her husband, Tony of Olton and Lydia Salas of Abernathy; two brothers, Roy P.

HARRY L. JEFFERSON, SR.

Services for Harry Louis Jefferson, Sr., 66, of Sudan, who died Thursday, May 31, 2018, were held Saturday morning, June 9, at New Mount Olive Baptist Church in Littlefield. Rev. H.K. Thomas, Jr. presented the eulogy. Interment was in the Sudan Cemetery, with McCarty Funeral Home of Littlefield in charge of arrangements. He was born Dec. 4, 1951 to Morris and Vera Jefferson in Chilton, TX. He attended schools in Sudan, and still holds the record for the 100-meter dash. He was serving in the Air Force when the Vietnam War closed. He was preceded in death hy his mother, Vera Jefferson; his son, Harry Jefferso, Jr.; and brothers, Ernest Jefferson and James Miller.

RAY W. FREEMAN, M.D.

Ray Winston Freeman, M.D., of Hale Center, died Wednesday, May 30, 2018, in Plainview. Memorial Service was held Monday morning, June 4, 2018 at First United Methodist Church of Hale Center, followed by a reception and family visitation in the Fellowship Hall. Arrangements were under the personal direction of Ramage Funeral Directors in Hale Center. Dr. Freeman was born Dec. 18, 1922 on a ranch in Stephens County, to Ora Elizabeth Williams Freeman and Roscoe Albert Freeman. After graduating from Meridian High School in 1940, he attended Trinity Christian University and Texas Wesleyan, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1946. Upon receiving his Doctor of Medicine in 1950 from Southwestern Medical School, he completed his training as an intern at Brooke Army Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, Texas during the Korean War as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps. He then completed his residency at E.A. Conway Memorial Hospital, Monroe, Louisiana.

IRIS TAYLOR HARLIN

Church service for Iris Taylor Blackwell Harlin, age 98, of Sudan, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Sudan with Mike Woods of Sudan officiating. Burial will be in Sudan Cemetery, with Ellis Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Iris died Saturday, June 2, 2018 in Littlefield. She was born Feb. 18, 1920 in Clarksville, to Mack C. and Kinnie (Whitley) Taylor. She married William H. Blackwell on Jan. 15, 1946. After William died on Aug. 28, 1953, Iris married Percy V. Harlin on Oct. 3, 1955 in Clovis, NM. Iris worked in a defense plant during World War II. She was a member of the Sudan Senior Citizens, the First Baptist Church of Sudan, and a member of the Sweethearts of Texas at her nursing home. Iris is preceded in death by her first husband, William Blackwell; her second husband, Percy Harlin; her parents; two sisters; and four brothers.

Ted Zant, 73 of Goldthwaite passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 in Lubbock, TX. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2018 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery Pavilion. He was born Jan. 2, 1945 in Orange, TX to the late Curt and Lottie Coker Zant. He was a farmer for many years in Anton, TX area before moving to Goldthwaite. He was a member of Western Heritage Cowboy Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, Curt and Lottie Zant.

Wilma Beeson Covington

Wilma Beeson Covington of Olton died May 30, 2018. Services will be 10:00 a.m. on June 1, 2018 at Olton Cemetery. Wilma was born May 21, 1922 at Buffalo Flat, Hall County Texas to Bob Beeson and Mary Lou (Daniel) Beeson. She attended Turkey schools graduating in 1941. She married Tullie Covington December 13, 1941. After living in Memphis, they moved to Hereford where they owned and operated Covington Sand and Gravel. Then moved to the North Spade/Hart Camp area in 1951 to farm. They operated the community store at North Spade. They retired and moved to Olton in 1976. Wilma was an active member of Brownwood Art Guild and Brownwood Home Demonstration club. She also enjoyed fishing.
