HARRY L. JEFFERSON, SR.

Services for Harry Louis Jefferson, Sr., 66, of Sudan, who died Thursday, May 31, 2018, were held Saturday morning, June 9, at New Mount Olive Baptist Church in Littlefield. Rev. H.K. Thomas, Jr. presented the eulogy. Interment was in the Sudan Cemetery, with McCarty Funeral Home of Littlefield in charge of arrangements. He was born Dec. 4, 1951 to Morris and Vera Jefferson in Chilton, TX. He attended schools in Sudan, and still holds the record for the 100-meter dash. He was serving in the Air Force when the Vietnam War closed. He was preceded in death hy his mother, Vera Jefferson; his son, Harry Jefferso, Jr.; and brothers, Ernest Jefferson and James Miller.

RAY W. FREEMAN, M.D.

Ray Winston Freeman, M.D., of Hale Center, died Wednesday, May 30, 2018, in Plainview. Memorial Service was held Monday morning, June 4, 2018 at First United Methodist Church of Hale Center, followed by a reception and family visitation in the Fellowship Hall. Arrangements were under the personal direction of Ramage Funeral Directors in Hale Center. Dr. Freeman was born Dec. 18, 1922 on a ranch in Stephens County, to Ora Elizabeth Williams Freeman and Roscoe Albert Freeman. After graduating from Meridian High School in 1940, he attended Trinity Christian University and Texas Wesleyan, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in 1946. Upon receiving his Doctor of Medicine in 1950 from Southwestern Medical School, he completed his training as an intern at Brooke Army Hospital, Fort Sam Houston, Texas during the Korean War as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps. He then completed his residency at E.A. Conway Memorial Hospital, Monroe, Louisiana.

IRIS TAYLOR HARLIN

Church service for Iris Taylor Blackwell Harlin, age 98, of Sudan, is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at First Baptist Church in Sudan with Mike Woods of Sudan officiating. Burial will be in Sudan Cemetery, with Ellis Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Iris died Saturday, June 2, 2018 in Littlefield. She was born Feb. 18, 1920 in Clarksville, to Mack C. and Kinnie (Whitley) Taylor. She married William H. Blackwell on Jan. 15, 1946. After William died on Aug. 28, 1953, Iris married Percy V. Harlin on Oct. 3, 1955 in Clovis, NM. Iris worked in a defense plant during World War II. She was a member of the Sudan Senior Citizens, the First Baptist Church of Sudan, and a member of the Sweethearts of Texas at her nursing home. Iris is preceded in death by her first husband, William Blackwell; her second husband, Percy Harlin; her parents; two sisters; and four brothers.

Ted Zant, 73 of Goldthwaite passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 in Lubbock, TX. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2018 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held on Friday, June 8, 2018 at 1 p.m. at Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery Pavilion. He was born Jan. 2, 1945 in Orange, TX to the late Curt and Lottie Coker Zant. He was a farmer for many years in Anton, TX area before moving to Goldthwaite. He was a member of Western Heritage Cowboy Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, Curt and Lottie Zant.

Wilma Beeson Covington

Wilma Beeson Covington of Olton died May 30, 2018. Services will be 10:00 a.m. on June 1, 2018 at Olton Cemetery. Wilma was born May 21, 1922 at Buffalo Flat, Hall County Texas to Bob Beeson and Mary Lou (Daniel) Beeson. She attended Turkey schools graduating in 1941. She married Tullie Covington December 13, 1941. After living in Memphis, they moved to Hereford where they owned and operated Covington Sand and Gravel. Then moved to the North Spade/Hart Camp area in 1951 to farm. They operated the community store at North Spade. They retired and moved to Olton in 1976. Wilma was an active member of Brownwood Art Guild and Brownwood Home Demonstration club. She also enjoyed fishing.

RAY SOOTER

Ray Sooter, 87, Halfway, passed away Monday, May 28, 2018 in Lubbock. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Garland Street Church of Christ in Plainview with Jackie Qualls and Kevin Igo officiating. Interment followed in Halfway Cemetery. He was born Jan. 25, 1931 in Posey, Texas to Claude Sooter I and Eunice Crone Sooter. Ray graduated from Cooper High School in 1948. He married Inez Rainey Sept. 1, 1950 in Lubbock. They moved to Plainview in 1969, and then to Halfway in 1975. He began work at Barrett’s Automotive in Plainview. He then was part owner at Emberton Supply in Halfway, and also was the caretaker for the Halfway Cemetery. Ray was involved in coaching Little League and was an avid fan of Wayland Baptist University sports. He attended Garland Street Church of Christ. Ray enjoyed deer hunting, and playing Liverpool Rummy and 42. Ray is survived by his wife, Inez Sooter of Plainview; a daughter, Shan Gill and husband, Danny of Ft.

MARY JUNE TWITTY

Mary June Twitty, 90, of Littlefield, died Sunday, May 20, 2018 in Houston’s Methodist Sugarland Hospital. Funeral services were scheduled for Saturday, June 2, at 1 p.m. at New Jerusalem Baptist Church in Littlefield. Rev. Randy McCarty and Pastor Ronald Ross officiated. Interment was in Littlefield Cemetery, with McCarty Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. “Mae June” was born June 26, 1927 in Paris, Texas to Tom and Texanna Hardison Ellis. She attended public school in Lamar County. She married Lonnie Twitty, Sr. in December 1945, and they moved to Littlfield in 1950. She worked for Littlefield Hospital for more than 20 years, and was also a home maker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Twitty; her son, Derek Gerard; two brothers, Leon Lorenzo Ellis (Utchie) and Wilbertt Ellis; and a sister, Emma Joyce Beamon. Surviving are a sister, Josie Henderson; four sons, Kenneth Twitty and wife, Debra, Colodis Twitty and wife, Beatrice, Lonnie B.

XAVIER HERNANDEZ

Xavier Hernandez, 25, of Littlefield, passed away Thursday, May 24, 2018. He was born Sept. 1, 1992 in Lubbock to Freddie Hernandez Jr. and Elizabeth Longoria Hernandez. Xavier graduated from Littlefield High School in 2010. He was currently employed at C&J Energy in Midland. He enjoyed playing disc golf, barbequing and dancing. Xavier volunteered at MDA Summer Camp for several years. He was a hard worker who was dedicated to his job. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Xavier is survived by his parents, Freddie and Elizabeth Hernandez of Littlefield; a brother, David Lee Hernandez; paternal grandparents, Alfredo and Julia Hernandez of Littlefield and Isabel Longoria Jr. and Mary Longoria of Littlefield; uncles, Ronald Hernandez, John Paul Hernandez, and Randy Longoria all of Littlefield, Juan Manuel “Smiley” Hernandez and wife, Lupe of Crystal City, and Hector Longoria and wife, Lisa of new Braunfels; and numerous cousins, extended family and many friends.

ANSELMA Z. REYES

Church service for Anselma Zambrano Reyes, 60, of Earth, who died Saturday, May 26, 2018 in Plainview, is scheduled for 3 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 30, at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Earth, with Father Rene Perez of Muleshoe, officiating. Rosary was said Tuesday night at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church. Burial will be in Earth Memorial Cemetery, with Parsons-Ellis Funeral Home of Earth in charge of arrangements. Anselma was born April 22, 1958 in Muleshoe, to Efren and Amalia Zambrano, Sr. She married Antonio Reyes on Aug. 28, 2007 in Earth. She was a caregiver to others, and was a member of the St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church in Earth. She is preceded in death by her parents; two granddaughters, Christena Reyes and Sonia Dimas; and a great-granddaughter, Athena Chapa. Anselma is survived by her husband, Antonio; son, Ernesto Torres Jr.
