STELLA HELMS

Stella Helms, 101, of Abernathy, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, at her home. Services were held Monday afternoon, Feb. 26, 2018 at the Abernathy First Baptist Church with son-in-law, Teddy Teeter and Rev. Glenda West officiating. Burial followed in the Strip Pearce Chapel Cemetery, under the direction of Abell Funeral Home & Flower Shop of Abernathy. She was born Aug. 19, 1916 in Hale County to William Irlo and Maggie Ella (Durham) Pierson. She graduated from the Lakeview School and married Audrey Doyle (A.D.) Helms, Nov. 3, 1947 in Plainview. They moved to Abernathy in 1955. She retired in 1975 from her employment with an insurance company. She was a Sunday school teacher and played the piano at the First Assembly of God. She is survived by a daughter; Louise Teeter and husband, Rev.

MARIE (JARNAGIN) WALKER

Marie Walker died Feb. 16, 2018, at the age of 84. Born on Feb. 20, 1933, in Daisy, OK to Walter Francis and Blanche (Richmond) Jarnagin. Marie graduated from Littlefield High School in May of 1950. Marie married, Jack Preston (J.P.) Walker on, Jan. 31, 1953, in Clovis, NM. They moved to Plainview. Marie was a homemaker, helped her husband farm and was an active part of her husband’s business, Walker Brothers Produce in Plainview. She also, was involved in teaching Sunday School at Ninth and Columbia Church of Christ. She is proceeded in death by her husband, Jack Preston Walker; sons, Brian Carl Walker and Perry Walker; her parents; sisters, Alyine Lieske and Mattie Lee Wallance; brothers, Jack Jarnagin and Jimmy Jarnagin.

RALPH GEORGE

Funeral services for Ralph A. George were held at Highland Baptist Church on Friday afternoon, Feb. 23, 2018. Burial service took place immediately following at Resthaven Cemetery. Ralph died Feb, 17, 2018 in Lubbock at age 83. He was born in Littlefield to Roy Robert George and Ovie Lee Bates George. Ralph graduated from Bula High School and earned a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree from Texas Tech. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the 1950s. He was a teacher and counselor for many years. He taught one year at Bula High School. The rest of his career was in L.I.S.D. He then became a high school counselor and served at Estacado High School until his retirement in 1996. Ralph was a member of Highland Baptist Church. He was proceeded in death by both parents and a sister, Anita Hall. Survivors include his wife, Donivee George; daughters: Christi Turner and husband, Dr.

JOE GILBERT

Celebration of the memory of Joe Gilbert, 67, of Lubbock, who died Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018, was held at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 16, 2018 in Sanders Memorial Chapel of Sanders Funeral Home in Lubbock. Joe was born Feb. 27, 1950 in Littlefield, to Joe and Fern Gilbert. He graduated from Littlefield High School. In 1969, he answered his nation’s call by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. While raising three sons, Joe was a sales manager for 26 years at Scoggin-Dickey, before retiring in 2017. He leaves behind his second wife, Mary Jo Ochoa Gilbert; three sons, Rowdy, Joshua and Michael Gilbert; two sisters, Linda Charlton and Janna Smith; a brother, Zane Gilbert; and grandchildren, Jayden, Makayda, Mackenzie, Michael, Olivia and Finley.

BRENDA LIGHT

Brenda Light, 77, of Dallas and formerly of Olton, died Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2018, in Dallas. Funeral services were held Monday morning, Feb. 19, 2018, at the First United Methodist Church in Olton with Brother Neely Landrum officiating. Interment followed at Olton Cemetery under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors. Brenda was born Jan. 26, 1941, in Brownfield, Texas, to Melvin and Katie (Jones) Spear. She graduated from Andrews High School in 1959 and attended Odessa College and West Texas State College. Graduating with her education degree, Brenda was a teacher at Olton I.S.D. for 33 years. On Aug. 24, 1984, Brenda married A.C. Light, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She enjoyed fishing and traveling. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, A.C. Light. Those left to cherish her memories include her son, Barry Giles and his husband, John Gambill of Dallas.

JUAN GARCIA

Juan Garcia, Jr., 48, of Olton, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2018, in Post, Texas. Rosary was said Thursday evening, Feb. 15, 2018, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Olton. Mass was celebrated Friday morning, Feb. 16, 2018, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with Fr. Sylvester DSouza officiating. Interment followed at Olton Cemetery under the direction of Ramage Funeral Directors. Juan was born June 23, 1969, in Mineral Wells, Texas, to Juan Sr. and Yolanda (Solis) Garcia. A lifetime Olton resident, Juan was a talented leatherworker and a Catholic. He was preceded in death by his father, Juan Garcia, Sr.; his stepfather, Arnulfo Maldonado; and his grandparents.
