Local residents support ice bucket challenge for ALS

Members of the City of Littlefield’s EMS, Police and Fire Departments volunteered to accept the ice bucket challenge Monday evening, near the fire department. They were standing in ice water, and in a container that caught the water, so it wouldn’t be wasted. Shown as volunteers are, in no particular order, Joe Don Sierra, Jimmy Garcia, Johnathan Salazar, Neal Ray, Sal Acevedo, Josh Padgett, Jamie Grey, Heath Lowe, Michael Williamson, Janine Butler, Alissa Jordan, Michael Jordan, Naomi Molina, Cheryl Galan, Rene Galan, Derek Hill, Albert Rangel, Ann Robison, Efrain Rios, Buddy Holmes, Rick Villanueva, Cami Jones, Byron Cervantes, Val Coronado and Sue Scott.

Former LHS cheerleader visits on her 90th birthday

Irene Koke Rader, center, a 1942 graduate of Littlefield High School, celebrated her 90th birthday Wednesday, and was treated to a visit at the Littlefield Lands / Duggan House Museum, by her two sons.

A former Littlefield High School Cheerleader, Irene Koke, who graduated from Littlefield High School in 1942, celebrated part of her 90th birthday in Littlefield Wednesday. The fourth child of eight in the family of William and Effie Jane Koke, Margaret Helen Irene Koke was born Aug. 20, 1924 in Bartlett, Tex., about 50 miles north of Austin.

4-H members, leaders honored at banquet Saturday

Recipients of the 2014 4-H Gold Star Awards, the highest award given throughout the state of Texas to outstanding 4-H members of each county, were presented Saturday night to Brogan Stewart and Terra DeSautell, both of Littlefield 4-H; and Kyle Peggram of the Olton 4-H Club.

Numerous awards were presented to Lamb County 4-H members and their adult leaders Saturday night, during the annual Achievement Banquet. This year’s theme was: “Tall in the Saddle with Lamb County 4-H.” 4-H is also celebrating 100 years of Texas 4-H Tradition in 2014.

4-H members visit Commissioners’ Court Monday

Monday morning, these 11 members of the Lamb County 4-H attended the regular meeting of the Lamb County Commissioners’ Court.

Monday morning, Lamb County Commissioners hosted a visit from several Lamb County 4-H members, and Lamb County Extension Agent Mandi Seaton. Mandi reported there are 138 members in the county’s 4-H program, and that six of them received scholarships amounting to $65,000.

Jennifer Galey joins staff at LHC Family Medicine Clinic

Jennifer Galey, who earned her Master of Science degree as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2013 from Angelo State University in San Angelo, has joined the medical staff at Lamb HealthCare Center’s Family Medicine Clinic.

LambHealthcare Center’s Family Medicine Clinic has acquired a new Family Nurse Practitioner on its staff, as of Monday, Aug.11. Jennifer Galey, a native of Plains, comes to the clinic after working almost 12 years with University Medical Center in Lubbock. She was born and raised at Plains, attended schools there until she was a senior, when the family moved to Lubbock, and she graduated from Monterrey High School.

Olton recognizes special people at ceremony

Ellen Small, 96 years old, was honored Saturday afternoon as being the oldest woman present for the Sandhills Celebration’s special recognition ceremony in the Olton Chamber of Commerce Pavilion. She is a resident of Runningwater Draw Care Center.

KAWASAKI MULE

The 2014 Man of the Year who was recognized at the Olton Chamber of Commerce Banquet was Bub McIver, School Superintendent. He was driving this Kawasaki Mule that was won Saturday night by Robert Struve of Olton, when his ticket was the last ticket drawn from the 96 tickets that were sold for the raffle.

The Amherst Volunteer EMS and Fire Department personnel dedicated the Amherst EMS Building to Bubba Dunn Saturday, during the annual Amherst Celebration. Presenting the plaque to Dunn is Gayla Gonzalez, EMT volunteer, and Chamber of Commerce president.
