Rocky Ford Church gets surprise guests

By JUNE HEIM

On Sunday, May 6, 2018, members of Rocky Ford Baptist Church experienced a special treat and surprise.

Ninety-year-old Weldon Reed, his son and daughter-in-law, Kenny and Darla Reed, all of Portales, N.M. had come to attend worship services.

Weldon had attended Rocky Ford with his family when he was a child, and had moved to the Portales vicinity many years ago, but had never forgotten the ties he had to this little, country church. Weldon’s family had attended services at the old community tabernacle north of Blackwater Draw, which was a mile from what is now Hwy. 385, and his dad helped construct what is now Rocky Ford Baptist Church. The present-day building was constructed in 1938 after Hwy 385 was paved.
