NEW TRUCK

Recently, the Littlefield Fire Department received notice that the department was awarded a grant from the Texas Forest Service for a DoD FFP (Department of Defense Federal Firefighting Property) for a Stewart Stevenson M1093, 1997, (LAPES/AD) truck, cargo 5 ton, 6x6, 5 ton flatbed. Page Purvis, the Regional Fire Coordinator out of the Lubbock Texas Forest Service office, said old military trucks are given to fire departments, and those departments have 180 days after they receive it, to spec it out as a fire truck. The truck has to be painted a non-military color and get a slip-on unit for a pump package that will be placed on the back. The Littlefield Fire Department also received a $20,000 grant for a new diesel motor/pump, poly tank and hose reel. Purvis said once all the stipulations are met, she will come back out and take a picture to show that the military vehicle has been converted into a fire truck. After that, Purvis said within one year, the title of the truck is shipped to the department. She said this was one of many programs used to help the volunteer fire departments in the area. Littlefield Fire Chief Jamie Grey said the truck will be converted into a brush truck unit.
